Motivator Monday: Checking in on 2025 citations

Happy New Year! It’s our first Motivator Monday for 2025, so thought I’d check in on how my ‘publish or perish’ journey is going, and happy to report it’s going quite well! ;) Specifically, as of 2025 I’ve officially crossed 2100 citations on Google Scholar and have a h-index of 20! Exciting news.

As you can see from the second image this has been a big year for citations so, in the interest of doing more than just bragging, I did some quick stats on how my citations break down. Around 25% of my citations are for my PhD work now (non speech sound classification), and 25% for work in Extended Reality (h/t to James Birt!), but the main contributor is now overwhelmingly GenAI, with 30% of my citations in this space (h/t Joey Crawford!), which surprised me.

For the completists out there, that leaves around 10% for Educational Theory (h/t Kwong Nui Sim, Robert Vanderburg and many others), 5% for work by RHD students (h/t Josiah Koh mainly!), and 5% for other bits and pieces. Overall, a big year for me, a good motivator, and a reminder of what to focus on and also what gets cited. Good way to start!

N.B. Also, FYI from 2025 I’m also archiving all my Tech Byte posts on my website for easy access. Head to http://thecreatelab.com.au/blog to find them.
